5 Things a GIA Report Won't Tell You

You probably already know that you should never buy a diamond without a GIA report. A grading report is one of the most important tools you can have when shopping for a diamond.

It provides objective information about a diamond's measurable attributes, like the 4Cs, fluorescence, polish, and symmetry. What it doesn't tell you is whether the diamond is actually beautiful.

Because a GIA report is exactly that. Just a report.

Some of the qualities that make a diamond truly special simply can't be captured on paper. That's where experience, expert guidance, and seeing a diamond in person come in.

Here are five things a GIA report won't tell you.

1. What the Diamond Actually Looks Like

No, seriously.

A grading report does not evaluate a diamond's face-up beauty. Two diamonds can have nearly identical grades on paper and look completely different in real life.

One may appear bright, lively, and full of sparkle, while the other can look flat or lifeless despite sharing the same color, clarity, and carat weight.

This is why we always encourage clients to view diamonds in person whenever possible. Join us for one of our new Loose Diamond Appointments to see the in-person difference for yourself.

2. The Diamond's Ratio

When shopping for elongated shapes like ovals, pears, or emerald cuts, proportions matter...a lot.

Do you prefer a softer, rounder oval? Or are you drawn to a long, elegant silhouette?

A grading report will list the diamond's measurements, but it won't tell you how that shape will actually appear. You'll have to do the math yourself by calculating the length-to-width ratio.

The ratio is often what determines whether a diamond looks balanced on your hand or not quite right for your taste.

3. Whether the Diamond Has Antique Faceting

At AARYAH, we're particularly fond of diamonds with antique faceting.

These stones often feature larger, chunkier facets that create broad flashes of light rather than the splintery sparkle commonly seen in modern cuts. Think romantic candlelight sparkle rather than disco ball.

Unfortunately, a grading report won't tell you if a diamond has this type of personality.

You have to see it for yourself.

Some diamonds simply have a soul, and antique faceting is one of those characteristics that's impossible to communicate through a certificate alone.

4. Milkiness

A diamond can receive excellent grades on paper and still appear slightly hazy or lacking in brilliance.

This milky appearance is not measured on a grading report.

While factors such as strong fluorescence can sometimes contribute to a softer appearance, overall luster and transparency require an experienced eye to evaluate.

When selecting diamonds for our clients, we're looking beyond the report to ensure every stone is bright, brilliant, and full of life.

5. Whether the Diamond Has a Bow Tie

A bow tie is a visual shadow that appears across the center of certain elongated diamond shapes, including ovals, pears, and marquise cuts.

It's important to note a bow tie is not an inclusion or a structural defect. It occurs when light isn't reflecting optimally through the center of the diamond.

And not all bow ties are bad.

A subtle bow tie can add dimension and character to a diamond. The issue arises when the bow tie is so prominent that it causes the center of the stone to appear dark or lifeless.

Once again, this is something that can't be properly evaluated from a grading report alone.

The Bottom Line

A GIA report is an important starting point, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

The most beautiful diamonds are chosen through a blend of science, expertise, and emotion. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn't simply to find a diamond that looks good on paper. It's to find one that makes you stop and stare.
